A Senior lecturer at the school of Pharmacy, University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Patrick Amoateng has named Diabetes as a major cause of neuropathic pains and has called on diabetic patients to control their blood glucose levels as a way of managing the condition.
“If we are looking at the scale of all the things that cause neuropathy, we will put diabetes on top” he said.
Dr. Amoateng made these comments on HSTV’s Morning Show, Healthy Morning when he appeared on the show to continue discussion of the topic of pain and how to manage it.
He explained neuropathic pain as pain that occurs in the body because of damages or disturbances in the nerves.

Some more causes of neuropathic pain, he said, are accident injuries, infections such as HIV and herpes viruses and cancers.
Some common symptoms of neuropathic pains, he noted, are Numbness, chronic shooting or burning pains, and needle pain sensations
He therefore urged people who constantly experience such symptoms to visit the hospital for proper diagnosis and avoid self-medication.
